Two small studies found the rate of eating disorders in women attending fertility clinics to be approximately 10 percent or higher, which is much higher than the rates of eating disorders among women in the population. However, outcome studies have consistently reported that fertility rates in women with a lifetime history of anorexia nervosa do not differ from women without such a history. Thus, it appears that despite the high prevalence of menstrual irregularities, women with anorexia nervosa are becoming pregnant. Many women with bulimia nervosaâ€"even those at what would be considered a “healthy” weight rangeâ€"also have irregular menstrual periods. However, fertility does not seem to be a significant problem for women with bulimia nervosa. Having an Eating Disorder and Wanting to Be Pregnant If you have an eating disorder or issues with body image and want to get pregnant, it may be advisable to delay pregnancy and seek treatment for your eating disorder first. You will be stronger and healthier and better prepared for the challenge of pregnancy and parenthood. Establishing healthy habits in place of those associated with disordered eating can make your pregnancy easier and improve your chances for a healthy baby. Once you do move forward with getting pregnant, it can be very important to share your history and concerns with your health professionals. You can let them know, for example, to handle your weighing and weight gain gently and with extra compassion. Being Pregnant With an Eating Disorder Eating disorders often fly under the radar due to the shame and secrecy they evoke. Even when symptoms of eating disorders decrease during pregnancy, concerns about shape and weight are likely to remain high. One of the most significant physical changes during pregnancy is weight gain, something feared by many people with eating disorders. Some women struggle to tolerate pregnancy-related weight gain and body changes. Anecdotally, many women report that their pregnancies seemed to invite increased comments from other people about their bodiesâ€"this can be difficult. Yet others report feeling liberated from weight concerns during pregnancy. Some women with eating disorders appreciate pregnancy as a  new context to view their body and its capabilities. Pregnancy Outcomes Eating disorders can negatively affect all systems of the body and can impact the baby as well. Women with anorexia nervosa appear to have higher rates of miscarriage, prematurity, slower fetal growth, and low birth weight babies. Women with binge eating disorder have higher rates of miscarriage and an increased risk of higher birth weight babies. If You Are Pregnant With an Eating Disorder Many women with eating disorders are afraid to disclose their eating disorder, but failing to do so can increase the risk to you and your baby. Although you may feel ashamed or embarrassed, it is very important to talk to your healthcare providers and let them know about your eating disorder symptoms. You can benefit from the additional support. Your providers can help look out for the health of your baby. As of yet, there are no specific treatments for eating disorder during pregnancy. Recommended eating disorder treatments call for a team of professionals including a therapist and a registered dietitian nutritionist to join the obstetrician’s continuing care. A registered dietitian can be critical in providing information about nutritional needs during pregnancy and how much weight should be gained. Many women with past or current eating disorders struggle with accepting this weight gain and can benefit from additional education and support on the importance of eating enough during pregnancy. Postpartum Eating Disorders Just as pregnancy can impact the course of an eating disorder in a variety of ways, so too can the postpartum period. For women whose symptoms improve during pregnancy, two different post-partum patterns have been observed: some will continue to show decreased eating disorder symptoms following giving birth, while others relapse. High Risk The period after a woman has given birth is a high-risk time for the recurrence or exacerbation of eating disorder symptoms, especially in those whose symptoms decreased during pregnancy. Women experience tremendous pressure to return to their pre-pregnancy bodies and weight. This pressure can be especially distressing to those with an eating disorder. Depression Women with current or past eating disorders also appear to have higher rates of postpartum depression, which can also be a serious problem. There is some evidence that women with eating disorders may use breast milk expression as a purging method or prolong breastfeeding as a means to control body weight. Still, other women will avoid breastfeeding in order to return to eating disorder behaviors. Poverty And Social Structure Pitzak, Chris Soc. 422 Dr. Heaton May 17, 1999 POVERTY AND SOCIAL STRUCTURES Although the United States is one of the richest countries in the world many of it's people sleep in the streets, dig through garbage cans to find food, and carry all that they own in this world on their backs or in shopping carts. These people are known as the homeless. Recently I had the opportunity of helping, and at the same time being educated by one of the members of this unfortunate group. I was able to experience first hand how a homeless person thinks and feels through an intimate means of communications popularly known as writing notes. Why writing notes? Because the individual that I invited into my home and fed was both deaf and mute. He was male, middle aged, and of African American decent. Needless to say it was a conversation unlike any I have ever had. In this paper, I plan to detail the observations I made during our interaction, specifically addressing how social structures form a key element in both the lives of the affluent and indigent. I met Reggie through some of my friends. He was homeless and in need of help. One night he knocked on my door and wrote on his piece of paper, may I come in? I nodded affirmatively and motioned him to have a seat on the couch. After retrieving a pad of paper and pen, we began to communicate. We began with a couple of trivial questions and then I asked if he would like something to eat. He responded by writing yes please on his pad of paper and I quickly prepared some of the food we had in our refrigerator. As he ate, I asked him about himself and how he had arrived at the position he was currently in. He said he was from Virginia and was Mormon. He had been baptized there and learned that there were a large number of Mormons in Utah, and for that reason decided to move to out here. He had a car and so he packed his few belongings and came out to live with a people who had the love of Christ and would be more accepting. He obtained a minimum wage job and even a small apartment. Things seemed to be going good. After a short period of time Reggie lost his job because he missed too many days without notifying his employer, a result of his genetic disabilities, and shortly after could not pay rent. At the time I talked with him he was living in his old beat up car, trying to find a meal. Why did Reggie find himself in this impoverish state, and why was he unable to climb out of it? I believe it is largely because of social structures, namely his networks. When individuals form networks or groups they tend to associate with those who are like them. Equity theory explains this by claiming that people are most satisfied with a relationship when the ratio between benefits and contributions is similar for both partners. This would infer that networks would exist between those within a specific class but not across classes. By forming associations with those of equitable status, the rich form a very supportive network and the poor form a network that can sympathize with their situation at best. Standard, Standardize, and Standardized Standard, Standardize, and Standardized Standard, Standardize, and Standardized By Maeve Maddox A reader has asked for a discussion of the words standard, standardize and standardized: I ask because of a statement I made sometime ago, where I said, we took a standard test. But my friend thought it should have been we took a standardized test. I think Im correct since standard in this context is an adjective that qualifies the noun test. On the other hand, standardize is a transitive verb and it should convey a sense of action. However, when I surfed the internet to see how these words are used, I found a puzzling example: â€Å"There was no standardized time until train travel became common.† Would you consider this a correct way of using the word standardized? The verb standardize derives from the noun standard. Among the different meanings of the noun and the verb, these are the ones relevant to this discussion: standard noun: An authoritative or recognized exemplar of correctness, perfection, or some definite degree of any quality. standardize verb: To bring to a standard or uniform size, strength, form of construction, proportion of ingredients, or the like. Both standard and standardized function as adjectives, but with different meanings. One can speak of a â€Å"standard test† or a â€Å"standardized test,† but the two phrases do not mean the same thing. A standard test is the usual test given. For example, a â€Å"standard driving test† requires the learner to parallel-park. A â€Å"standard joke† is one that is often repeated. A â€Å"standard excuse† for not doing something is â€Å"I didn’t have time.† A  standardized test  is a  test designed, administered and scored according to specific guidelines based on a standard that has been established by some authoritative body. It’s even possible to speak of a â€Å"standard standardized test.† For example, a particular standardized test like the PARCC or ACT might be the â€Å"standard standardized test† in one state or district, but not in another. As for the phrase â€Å"standardized time,† the same sort of contextual considerations apply. One may speak of â€Å"standardized time† and â€Å"standard time.† Before train travel became common, local times, based on the sun or a locally chosen meridian, were sufficient. Once people had to plan journeys with departure and arrival times in different regions, a standardized method of telling time became necessary. The result of the nineteenth-century century standardization of time is standard time: a standard system of reckoning based on geographical time zones. Context, of course, rules, but generally speaking, standard conveys â€Å"the usual,† whereas standardized conveys something systematically designed and administered. Kennedy had established a quarantine to try and stop weapons coming to Cuba, but it was still a mystery when it came to what Kennedy’s response would be. Many Americans were in favor of using military action to remove the missiles, while critics of military action wanted to negotiate with the Soviets instead. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, John F. Kennedy chose the best course of action to end the crisis because he was able to prevent war, get the Soviet’s to remove their missiles from Cuba, and avoid alienating the United State’s allies. Mulan then goes out pretending she is one of the many soldiers in the army and saves her father from serving. What Mulan did not only showed courage but also some determination as well. She had courage to pose as a man in order to save her father from fighting in the war, where also she placed herself in dangerous positions being in the army with no training at all. Doing that Mulan showed how she went beyond her own abilities to help her father. Mulan also showed some determination in how when she was in the army she wanted to prove to many of the other soldiers that she can be considered a real warrior. Although nobody believed that he would actually build one, Homer goes on with no support in building a small rocket with the help of a smart classmate. Despite the first failure of his small rocket, Homer continued to chase after his dream of building a rocket until he finally does. His persistent determination and motivation to keep going after having no support in the beginning and having many fail attempts gets him to win a national science fair with a college scholarship. In the very beginning of the movie though, Homer had perseverance when he wanted to make the football team, even though the chances of him making it were clear that he wouldn’t. The ordinance was created by Executive order no. 14 and City Ordinance no. 8168 on 2007 by Former Manila Mayor Alfred S. Limit. This is intensified the drive against computer shops that allow accessing the students during class hours. This authorizes the parents and teachers to inspect computer shops and internet cafe, if they allow minors inside the shop. But only officers of accredited parents and teacher association are assigned to inspect and monitor the shop. They have the authority to take pictures and get the names of the minors, the owner of the shop and the names of the parents.
